Statistically, my family was able to beat the many odds of being black and born into poverty built within the deeply rooted American systems of oppression. As a mother and public school educator, the miseducation of the black male child and the over sexualization of black girls became too much to stand by and watch.

In 2019, I joined the founding members of the Lansing Mayor’s Inclusion & Diversity Advisory Council. Shortly after, I joined the work of the Mayor’s Racial Justice and Equity Alliance (MRJEA) to develop city recommendations for Youth & Education opportunities for Lansing city youth.

Today, I continue this work as a member of the Michigan State University Neighborhood Conflict and Youth Safety in Lansing project and a founding Board member of the Lansing Empowerment Network. The work of equity in education continues with the commitment to the creation of spaces where students and their families are at the center of decisions that connect to the success of our communities.
